Qatar, Malaysia endeavour to promote strategic ties

The bilateral relations between Qatar and Malaysia have been evolving and setting up to achieve new heights in various fields including political, social, economical and cultural as well. The political stability, economic strength and the progressive approach of the two nations have been the crucial constituents leading to the advancement of ties between the two.

Qatar has been Malaysia’s sixth-largest export destination on the economic front in 2018 and the third source of import from the West Asian region. The increased trade between the two nations has given new definitions to the bilateral ties, the two countries hold. Further improvements have been witnessed in trade in 2019 in comparison with that in the previous year that marked an increase of 29.3 per cent.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Qatar Investment Promotion Agency (IPAQ) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) is a clear stance of both the countries to cooperate towards promoting investment and trade ties. In another move, the signing of an MoU between Baladna Food Industries Company and Malaysian State Felcra Berhard Company, on the sidelines of the second edition of the Qatari-Malaysian Joint Trade Committee held in October, 2019, gestures establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Increased cooperation on various platforms, smooth economic and political ties are evident of the warm and friendly relations between Malaysia and Qatar since their establishment in 1974. While the inception of the Non-Aligned Movement proves to be an entity advocating the idea of maintaining peace and strengthening ties for the development of the counties and of the world, Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad’s recent visit to Qatar comes out to be an effort in line with NAM’s ideology to boost mutual interests and respect towards each others’ territorial integrity while ensuring the peaceful co-existence with the member nations and the world.

Malaysian PM’s visit is an attestation of Malaysia’s efforts to deepen the bonds of friendship with the latter to serve the mutual interests of both the countries. While the national prosperity and security remains no longer served and secured by actions of any one nation acting in isolation, in a multipolar world, interdependence paves way for opportune moment for the integration of diversity and creativity among cultures, nations and economies across the world. The visit of Malaysian Prime Minister to Qatar becomes apparent of how the two nations value their friendship and believe in working together towards a conducive environment for maintaining global peace, stability and prosperity.

While both the nations share deepened cooperation at the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement, the ideologies and principles shared by the organisations get prominently onboard to ensure development and serve interests of the Member States and nations across the world. While the visit comes out to be an optimistic gesture from the Malaysian side, the Qataris have also welcomed the endeavours to level up the efforts to strengthen trade and economic relations and brotherhood shared by both the countries.

During the visit, Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of a high-level joint committee. Malaysia is an attractive destination for Qatari government to make investments in several economic and industrial sectors, also including, financial, real estate and tourism sector.

Noting that 72 firms jointly owned by Qatari and Malaysian governments are currently being operated in the construction, engineering, information technology and oil and gas sector, it is quite perceivable that the future of Qatari-Malaysian cooperation is promising in light of the economic potential of both the countries that promise to foster bilateral trade that has been recorded reaching $291 million in the first half of 2019.

The partnership shared by Qatar and Malaysia along with their determined and firm efforts towards the enhancement of ties shared by them and the value of strengthened ties in their views are symbolic of the success of the two nations.
