The year 2017 has been predicted to be one of the hottest years in human history. Already NASA has confirmed shrinkage in the polar ice cap which has been marked as the biggest in geological history. The United States President Trump has ordered his Cabinet today to start demolishing a wide array of Obama-era policies on global warming –including emissions rules for power plants , limits on methane leaks , a moratorium on federal coal leasing and the use of social cost of carbon to guide government actions .
The year 2015 marked the first international climate change conference in Paris , this was one of the moments where governments from all countries were under immense scrutiny by the general public . Some of the decisions which were approved during the confrence include reduction of carbon emissions, transparency in reviewing pollution and accountability on behalf of nations .
However this year is showing itself as marked by internal conflicts in Global Powers internationally, UK’s exit from the European union , unstable political climate in the United States the future of international climate change policy need to be advocated clearly by the developing nations who are being affected in the biggest manner . In times like these the Non-Aligned movement can lead the way towards a better tomorrow.
Affects in the Developing Nations :
Once Global warming will increase the variability of weather will be more and most likely it will be marked by extreme changes . The German Climate Risk Index which ranks countries according to their vulnerability to weather related risks ranked developing countries like Bangladesh , Mayanmar and Honduras in its top ten position .
According to a survey 95% of fatalities from natural disasters in last 25 years occurred in developing countries, it also states that in many developing countries weather changes will be more pronounced Bangladesh and Mayanmar will probably be submerged in the next 10 years. The problem is better stated when connected to the livelihood of major chunks of populations living in these areas , developing countries do not have a history of large emissions of green house gases and thus have not contributed significantly to climate change but are going to suffer the most because of its outcomes .
Ways to reduce this vulnerability :
In the year 2005 the Framework Convention of Munich Climate Change Initiative provided guidelines to bring together insurers , experts on climate change , NGO’s and policy researchers intent on finding solutions to reduce the risks posed by climate change. MCCI is a registered non-profit association with a international frameworks (UNFCCC, WORLD BANK ) and public private insurance mechanisms are provided for those affected by global climate change . The Non-Aligned movement can form similar initiative between its members , especially since such structure provide the potential to link insurance with incentives to prevent losses . Besides adaptation of such infrastructure countries can also reduce green house gas emission which are necessary to avoid unmanageable conditions in the second half of this century .
Renewable energies are the key to reductions of C02 . Many members of the movement are rich in natural resources through which they can produce renewable energies , especially solar radiation . In cooperation with industrialized nations these resources can be used to provide sustainable clean energy for these countries themselves and also to export them to industrialized nations and thus also create sustainable business opportunities . Initiatives of such nature can be seen utilized through the Dii Company which allows large investments into renewable energies in North African desert in partnership with other North African countries. In the past the Non-Aligned movement has resolved many international conflicts and also intervened in the restructuring of major international policy makers like the U.N. It is time that the movement takes a lead in climate change initiative .
