Racism and Racial Discrimination threat to Global Peace

Racism is the notion that features and abilities can be ascribed to people based on their race and that some racial groups are superior to others, causing discriminatory or abusive behaviour towards them. Racism and discrimination have been used as powerful weapons encouraging xenophobia and fear or hatred of others, in times of conflict and war, and even during economic downturns, and has seeped into today’s everyday affairs.

Millions of people in countries worldwide are facing ghastly atrocities being perpetrated by either an ignorant lot or by those in power who wish to use it to manipulate their hold on the people. The situation is worsening further in the current global scenario which sees an escalated chaos and intolerance towards such differences. Such an attitude poses a threat towards global peace. Non-Aligned movement needs to take a strong stand on the on-going discriminatory behaviour towards different races residing within the same perimeters of the earth causing hate, increased feelings of superiority and inferiority. There looms a darkness above the world which needs the world to come together and help remove such obscene arrogance and hatred which creates more factions and violence, sealing off the fate of the world to its doomsday.

Aware of the important role that the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries has played in the struggle against racism and racial discrimination, the Heads of State or Government have expressed their concern about the new trend of the evolution of racism into discriminatory practices based on culture, nationality, religion or language, and vigorously rejected the contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance
In order to combat the problem of racism, NAM has reiterated the importance of the Durban Declaration, as well as the outcome of the Durban Review Conference adopted in 2009. Adopted by consensus at the 2001 World Conference against Racism (WCAR) in Durban, South Africa, the DDPA is a comprehensive, action-oriented document that proposes concrete measures to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

It is holistic in its vision, addresses a wide range of issues, and contains far-reaching recommendations and practical measures. The DDPA embodies the firm commitment of the international community to tackle racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance at the national, regional and international level. Recognition that no country can claim to be free of racism, that racism is a global concern, and that tackling it should be a universal effort, is an important achievement.

The Programme of Action spells out a number of strategies to achieve full and effective equality through international cooperation. They involve an effective international legal framework, enhanced regional and international cooperation, an active role for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the participation of a wide variety of actors, including civil society, non-governmental organizations and youth in the struggle against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. These measures have been advocated by NAM in various summits and ministerial meets.

NAM believes that there was an urgent need to address with greater resolve and political will the issue of racial discrimination in all spheres of life and in all parts of the world, including in areas under foreign occupation. The Non-Aligned Movement urged those countries that had not participated in the Durban Review Conference to implement all provisions of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action., reiterated the importance of the Durban Declaration, as well as the outcome of the Durban Review Conference adopted in 2009.
